Handheld Valve Exercisers

Turning valves and valve handwheels is a vital task in maintaining water infrastructure. An organization can have hundreds or even thousands of valves that must be controlled, or in some industries “exercised”, the process of running a valve through its full cycle to prevent sticking or freezing caused by factors such as tuberculation.

When a valve is connected to steel or ductile iron pipe has not been exercised regularly, dirt, rust and sediment known as tuberculation builds up around the valve, making it difficult or impossible to manually operate it when the need arrives, say during a water main break. Worse, simply putting too much force on the valve trying to turn it can break the valve stem, leaving costly replacement as the only option.

Wachs Pow-R-Drive 2, or P-2, along with the RS-2 handheld exercisers (operators) are the ideal tool for operating or exercising handwheel and rising stem valves, and are available in three different drive options. The P-2 is offered in your choice of high torque (HT) or high speed (HS) models, while the RS-2 is designed for use with rising stem valves.

Wachs handheld valve exercisers increase productivity, operator safety and valve protection.  They are the perfect tool for hard to reach valves, valve exercising and fast shut downs.  Portable for everyday use, and with multiple models available in electric, hydraulic or pneumatic power, they can deliver between 500 to 800 ft lbs of torque depending on the model. Both P-2 and RS-2 Rising Stem models are available with VITALS that offers recordability and advanced torque control.

  • he Wachs Pow-R-Drive 2 ("Power-Drive 2") or P-2 is a handheld valve turner/valve exerciser engineered for maintaining and operating critical valves. This portable and rugged workhorse is designed for daily use. Water utilities, municipal water services, and fire departments use the P-2 on valves and hydrants with standard operator nuts and non-rising-stem handwheels (with an optional adapter). Why Pow-R-Drive 2?
    • Easy to set up and operate, using a Pow-R-Drive is more productive than turning valves by hand with t-handles.
    • The P-2 can prevent common injuries caused by hand-turning valves with a valve key wrench.
    • The Pow-R-Drive 2 works hard, so the valve crew won't be worn out from opening and closing valves all day.
    • It provides enough torque for stubborn valves, and your operator will be less likely to shear off a valve nut.
    • They're ideal for hard-to-reach valves.
    • Using a Pow-R-Drive 2 can save money and prevent damage in fast shut-off situations.
  • Wachs Utility Products RS-2 handheld valve exerciser is the perfect tool for operating or exercising handwheel and rising stem valves. Utilizing a large, open 4in (102mm) hub design, it’s designed to accommodate most varieties of rising stems through the hub opening. The RS-2 offers up to 800 ft/lbs of torque depending on drive type, with a maximum of 55 rpm for fast, reliable opening and closing of water, wastewater and natural gas valves in the field. The RS-2 handheld valve exerciser, like our P-2 handheld, is designed with operator health in mind, helping to prevent arm and back injuries associated with manually turning large, stubborn or frozen valves. Portable for everyday use, the RS-2 is available in your choice of electric, hydraulic or pneumatic drive. It’s extremely solid build quality means years of trouble free, reliable operation. Wachs RS-2 offers a range of adapters and accessories to suit most applications, including PIV (Post Indicator Valves). There’s a 1in (25.4 mm) square drive adapter and telescoping valve keys, which used in conjunction can replicate the function of the P-2. Dedicated handwheel adapters that remain on the handwheel are optional, as is a universal handwheel adapter to fit most common handwheel types. All Wachs handheld exercisers come complete with a sturdy, steel storage case with carry handles.
